Small World

 11-1-2022

The streets are paved in diamonds…that’s what I saw when I looked down this morning on the way to breakfast. Millions and millions of tiny specks of light glistening in the morning sun. What a vision to wake up to today.

It’s a small world….One of the guys I work with was born and raised about a mile from where I was born and raised. Chris Mauk was born in 1961 and attended Cooper High School and graduated in 1979, ten years after me. He lived at 6329 46th Ave. No. Crystal, Mn 55428. I wonder if any of my family members recognize the name. He has the kindest, friendliest talk to anyone kind of personality. He’s a great addition to our McMurdo family.

It was a beautiful day today, the sun was out (all day), there was little to no wind and the temperature climbed to a balmy 14 degrees above zero! I’m taking a hiking safety class tonight so I can start hiking the area around McMurdo.

We’ve had an Italian Military airplane flying here this week. They usually stop by our work area to chat before they fly. One of them is from northern Italy around where my wife’s family are from. We talked for a few minutes about the area and some of the wines they produce. Again, small world. By the way, they operate on “Italian Time” which means they might say they’re taking off at 9:00 am but really that’s just a rough estimate of when they might go. They’re never in a hurry but always fun to talk to.
